My Week with Courtney Trouble

So, here’s the thing – I’ve been a fan of Courtney Trouble from the days of NoFauxxx (now rebranded as indiepornrevolution.com, when altporn was in its infancy and Suicide Girls was only just starting to piss people off. I thought NoFauxxx’s content was a little sparse (and at the time, it was), but its point of difference was obvious from the get go. I’ve followed Courtney’s career with interest, and when I started getting my mitts on the films they were making with a truly diverse range of body types and fucking styles, I started realising a whole lotta stuff about my own sexuality and body image. In short, I hold Courtney Trouble largely responsible for showing me that fat, squidgy bodies like mine could be hot-as-fuck. For that I’m eternally grateful.

So cut to 2013, like, a decade after Courtney started building this queer porn empire, and I get wind of the fact that Sydney’s Perv Queer Erotic Film Festival was bringing them to Australia. I decided someone would have to extend that to a Melbourne appearance or two, and that that someone might as well be me. So for the past couple of months I juggled full time study, a new gig as Mr Manager of the store where I work, working with the amazing Sun Streaming Studios on this hot-look new website and a whole lotta personal drama that we needn’t get in to. In short, this has been a really intense, busy, stressful time.

But then last week I collected one of my idols from Tullamarine Airport and all the crazy-busy-stress felt worthwhile. Within ten minutes, Courtney had laughed at an Arrested Development reference I had made during a conversation about pornography distribution and censorship and I knew we were going to get along jussssst fine. We were supposed to head into Joy FM for a live to air interview with Anstia and Christian Vega on Melbourne’s sex worker owned and operated radio show, The Vixen Hour, but flight delays weren’t kind to us and we didn’t make it in time, thankfully they had the good sense to do a quick ‘n’ dirty pre-record with Courtney at Sydney Airport, and if you missed it airing on Joy, you can listen to that on the podcast!

Wednesday was the first of our two scheduled events, and a rad group of Melbourne femmos and queers piled into the ever-opulent Baroness of Brunswick to watch a curated selection of Courtney’s work, which was followed up with a Q&A session. What seemed to strike attendees the most was how fucking down to earth Courtney is, so amazingly open about their work and their industry, so happy to chat to fans, sign autographs and pose for photos..

Thursday afternoon I took Courtney on a quick sightseeing journey around Melbourne, prompted by Gala’s recommendation of River Sausage (which was sadly closed) on the Yarra. We did speed-art viewing at the NGV before they closed, ducked in to see the infamous Chloe at Young & Jacksons and witnessed a post-Derby spat between an angry young man and woman on the bridge as we were crossing the river, fancy shoes in hand and all – ahh, Melbourne :)

Later that night, back at the Baroness, we were joined by Gala Vanting and Ms Naughty (sadly, Liandra Dahl couldn’t make it) for a big ol’ discussion on feminist pornography – what it is, what it is like to make it and the feels we might have viewing taboo acts through a femmo lens. I had a blast, and the vibe was amazing. I met some truly gorgeous folk and heard lots of exciting conversations and felt all the feels in the room, and at least a few people left feeling inspired to produce their own erotic work, or to seek out the highly acclaimed work of our panellists. Courtney even put together a handout with their personal queer porn recommendations for folk. Nice!

So, a week has gone by and I’ve come down from the high of my week with Courtney Trouble, and ready to get back to work to bring Melbourne more queer, feminist, sex-positive, subversive events. There is some exciting stuff in the works, and just a general sexy, exciting feeling kicking about in the air, and a group of sexcellent babes are working hard to make more of this sort of thing a regular occurrence. Thank you to all the superbabes who came along to these events, and to everyone who helped out behind the scenes, and to those who sponsored the panel event (Get Bucked!, That Sexy Show and Astroglide) – I love each and every one of you.

If you ever get the opportunity to bring the one and only queer porn icon Courtney Trouble to your town? Do it, you won’t be sorry.
